alien king

I'm a hudge movie buff and being the creative weirdo that I am I can't help wondering what the things you don't see in the movies look like. In this case the alien king. In none of the movies we see a king in the hive. And what would a queen do without a king to fertilize those eggs. so here's my take on him. The idea behind this design is that the two spikes sticking out to the side would form sort of a crown. Together with the big one pointing backward it would also turn him in to one mean battering ram if he lowers his head.

here he is ladies and gents, the only and only King of aliens:

And then I thought, why stop now, let's make a bust out of it...

the monster sculpt: a dream in pieces

Finally this ex-fellbeast, dragon type thing is starting look like a real sculpt.
Cutting up the piece turned out to be a great idea (which was apparently an olde trade secret). And so I got this idea (no surprise there) to seperate the head from the neck as well since I have at least two different heads in mind for this one. the first is in progress and you'll get to see it in this post for the other(s) you'll just have to wait.

but don't think this bird-like isn't going to change any more. Oh no I will have my changes, in this post or the next.

anyway here's the next series of pic's from the infamous puzzle dragon:

the monster sculpt... my prrrecioussss

Ok it's time to reveal my pride and shame when it comes to sculpting. I started this one as an ongoing project right after my first sculpt (which I named hightower). I wanted to make a bigger, more impressive sculpt but soon after starting it I realised that I just didn't have the skills (yet) to make it. So it was put on a backburner and every now and again I returned to it, usually going in a completly different direction with it.

So here are some shots of the beast, which actually started as a fell beast from lord of the rings.

notice the ruler on the right which is 20 centimeters

after covering the body with clay I realized it wasn't going to fit in my oven to bake it and I didn't have my trusty heat gun yet, so I decided to cut some stuff off muahahhaa.

here's some shots of head #2 for those of you that are keeping count. The idea was of a scaly neck, some armour on the head and two extremely long (japanese dragon style) tendrils flowing from the neck. when I posted these pic's on a sculpting forum one of the members pointed out that with the scales all the way around the neck as they are now, the thing just wouldn't be able to eat or breathe. So another one was boxed (lucky it was already cut off ;) ).

this is where I started to drift away from the whole fellbeast thing and went of to create something... undefined [cue spooky music].

and some more snapshots of bits and pieces in various states of completion. Did I mention I'm not that organized? 3+))

small tip: if you're going to make hudge motherf**king wings like these (about 30cm each), don't use just a thin wire and some epoxy putty, they will be to heavy and start to crack when baked. So my next challenge is casting these babies up in some tougher material.

I guess I'll keep this post 'short' and continue with the current progress in another one.
stay tuned for scenes of the next episode of... sorry, always wanted to say that 3+))

second doodle, midnight flood of inspiration

As I mentioned before I always have a milion ideas floating around in that head of mine (not all creative ideas are for sculpting, but you'll see that in another post). So this next doodle was created around midnight when I was watching some movie about knights.
It's sort of a semi-real, semi-comic type of thing which was a direct result of me being to lazy to make the edges of the helmet nice and straight. I also have some painted pic's but I don't really like how that turned out. It turns out I'm even worse at painting than I am at drawing (and sculpting). anyway here are the pic's, enjoy...

shield your eyes, here are some painted pic's..... oh the horror!

P.S. I realize that the backdrop for all the professionaly taken photographs is different for every shot. But don't you worry one of those milion ideas roaming beneath my scalp is to make a nice light tent for a more steady background and lighting. One of these days...

next stop: doodling

I was reasonably pleased how the first sculpt turned out and it lead to a million ideas for new sculpts. and so I started doodling and making a few unfinished pieces just to get the ideas out of my head. here is the first of those that survived long enough for me to take some pictures. this first one actually got to a finishing stage and was baked so i'll post some pic's of the final sculpt as well.

my first sculpt

after doodling a bit with 3DSMAX and photoshop and seeing hundreds of movies I wanted to try my hand at sculpting. After some research I decided to use super sculpey. As you can see by the drawing added to this post, my skills in that department are quite limited but I succeed to get the general idea on paper.

the idea for this sculpt grew from an enormous pack animal with long thin legs, to a muscular monster. so here are the pic's, enjoy...
